Chapter Nine – Xander

What a mess that was. I watch as Rhiannon storms off, a mix of emotions swirling within me. She should have let go. She was too rough . . .

But no one could have anticipated Thea’s response. I shudder to think what might’ve happened if Akila hadn’t stepped in.

Rhiannon is one of our best warriors. I thought by choosing her as an opponent, Thea could be challenged to express her powers properly without too much injury to a less experienced wolf. In a way, I was right. Rhiannon will be fine. I shudder to think what Thea would have done to a novice soldier.

I walk inside, deciding to oversee Thea’s care, and make my way to the infirmary. Now that the dust is settled, we’ll need to discuss what happened. I have an intense need to make sure she’s all right. I saw how shocked she was about her own display of power. And everyone saw how she struggled to change to her wolf initially, something that took the average teen less time to do. There’s much we have to discuss about her development.

As I pass Rhiannon’s room, I feel compelled to stop. I know she’s in there. Injured or not, she wouldn’t dare to go to the infirmary where I sent Thea. Since I’m here . . .

I open her door slowly to see her sitting on her bed. She’s holding a cooling satchel to her bruised ribs, icy smoke emanating from the small white pouch that encircles her dark red and purple bruises. As the door opens, she looks up at me and exhales.

“What are you doing here?” she says, a bitter tone in her voice. “Aren’t you supposed to be with your mate right now? Or have you not seen enough of my epic embarrassment today?”

“How are you feeling?” I ask as I walk all the way into the room.

“How do you think?” she snaps. I just regard her silently. She rolls her eyes and answers, “It hurts like crazy right now, but it will probably heal in a few hours. Nothing I haven’t dealt with before.”

“That’s good.”

I sit next to her, and we both stay silent. Sitting here like this reminds me a little of me and Thea on our wedding night. The terrible situation that we both find ourselves in.

“You know,” she says, breaking the silence, “she almost really hurt me out there.” She lifts her head to show me the ring of red forming around her neck. “I really thought for a second that she wasn’t going to stop. If Akila hadn’t torn her away from me—”

“Her powers have not fully manifested. We do not know the full range of her abilities just yet, and neither does she. You can’t hold that against her.”

Rhiannon raises amused eyebrows.

“Well. That was fast.” She chuckles. “It took years for you to come to the realization that we were more than friends. What’s it been? A month since she arrived, and already you’re taking her side?”

“Rhiannon—”

“She almost killed me today, Xander.
